Jake Burton Carpenter founded Burton Snowboards in Londonderry, Vermont in 1977. Within two years, he was in debt and building each board himself. Realizing that a snowboard company cannot exist without a sport to support it, Jake spent the early years promoting the sport of snowboarding, organizing competitions, and trying to create a market. Once the sport began to grow roots, the focus turned to Burton products by incorporating the latest technologies like P-tex bases and steel edges. Over the following years, Burton Snowboards has maintained its status as the leader in the snowboarding industry, establishing global reach in marketing and distribution, and continually developing and incorporating the latest technologies throughout its product lines. In recent years, Burton has also evolved into a full-fledged bag and apparel company, producing clothing and accessories for a snowboarding lifestyle it helped create.
