Skateboard Deck FAQs

What Should I Look For When Shopping For Skateboard Decks?

Aside from skating your board or landing a new trick, buying a new skateboard deck is one of the best parts of skateboarding. Setting up a fresh deck makes you feel good and getting the right deck can help you improve your skateboarding skills. There’re a lot of factors to consider when purchasing a new skateboard deck, including concave, construction, size, shape, and of course style. Check out our Skateboard Buying Guide to help answer the most common questions.

What Are the Different Types of Skateboard Decks?

There are three main types of skateboards, each meant for different types of skateboarding. Having a good understanding of the style riding you plan to do will help decide which skateboard type you need to buy. If you are on the beginner side of things, you may want to start with a cruiser style board or longboard to get the basic feel of pushing and balance while riding. If you are a more experienced skateboarder who rides mainly at skateparks, on ramps or at street spots, you’ll need a shorter, traditional style skateboard that is more maneuverable.

What Are the Different Skateboard Deck Shapes?

Standard Skateboard Decks: This is the best all around shape because they work well for just about every style of skateboarding. These skateboard decks resemble the shape of a popsicle stick, hence the term “popsicle decks”, because they feature both a tip and tail are exactly or nearly symmetrical.

Cruiser Decks: General transportation is normally the name of the game when it comes to cruiser decks. This style deck is usually a similar length to standard decks, but they come in a large variety of different shapes and widths.

Old School Decks: These style decks pay homage to vintage 80’s-style skateboards. These decks are normally much wider and have longer wheelbases, which makes them more stable and great for bowl skating and basic transportation. The extra width and shorter noses normally make old school decks more difficult to do flip tricks with, so they are not ideal for various types of street and park skating.

If you are a beginner looking for a large stable board that makes it easy to learn to balance, longboards are the boards for you. They are also ideal for mellow cruising, pushing long distances and skating down hills at high speeds. Check our Choosing a Longboard Deck page for more info.

What Is the Best Material for a Skateboard Deck?

The most common skateboard construction consists of seven thin layers of maple wood veneer, which are pressed and glued together with strong adhesives or resin. Maple is a dense hard wood that provides excellent strength and pop, making it the tried and true standard for decades.

Some skate decks are designed with layers of fiberglass or other materials to improve strength and retain pop. If you like to jump down stairs or put a heavy beating on your deck, check out these durable decks.

Other decks have vinyl or plastic coatings on the bottom to allow for smoother and longer slide tricks. Check these out if you want to board slide through pockets or tail slide for days without loading up on wax or screwing in rails.

What’s the Best Skateboard Deck for Beginners?

If you are a beginner, we recommend choosing a board standard popsicle board shape and a deck size that is proportional to the size of your feet. Check out our Best Beginners Skateboard Guide for all the details on how to choose the right skateboard for you.
