How to Clean Skateboard Grip Tape

Whether you are a lifelong skateboarder or just starting out, knowing how to keep your grip tape clean is something you should be familiar with. It not only makes your grip tape stickier, allowing you to get better traction, but there is also a mental appeal to having a clean visual aesthetic to your board. After all, you don’t want to be looking down at dirty grip when you are trying a new trick.

There are three methods to cleaning your grip tape including grip gum, a bristle brush, and hair dryer. Each application involves a different situation and we cover all of them below.

Grip Tape Gum

Grip gum is the most popular and easiest way to clean grip tape. You can find branded grip gum at your local shop or just grab some sanding belt cleaner from your local hardware store. Grip gum works best for removing dust, minor dirt and even gum. All you have to do is rub the grip gum along the dirty areas of your grip tape and it will remove the dirt.

Brush & Water

This brush method requires a bit more elbow grease and works best for removing crusty mud. Here is what you need:

  • Firm bristled toothbrush OR soft brass brush
  • Small container of water
  • Paper towel

First you will dip the bristles of the brush into the water. Don’t go overboard with the water because you just want to wet the surface of your grip but not soak your board. Gently rub the dirty area with the brush and use the paper towel to wipe away the debris. Once all the debris is wiped away you can rub grip gum along the area when it is dry to get it completely clean.

Hair Dryer & Paper Towel

If you happen to step on a waxed ledge and then transfer the wax to your grip tape it can be especially hard to remove since it becomes engrained in the grip tape and even grip gum won’t get it out. Instead, we recommend using a hairdryer and paper towel to remove it. You can use the hairdryer to heat the wax until it melts and then wipe it up with paper towel to finish the job.
